Are Memes and TikToks Scaremongering Your Audience?

In the current digital climate, the power of social media platforms, like TikTok, cannot be underestimated. Short videos and memes dominate the online narrative, especially among younger audiences. Yet, for all their virality, are these platforms perpetuating negativity and unfounded fear?

Insights from the Youth Forum

Recently, during one of our focus groups, Gen Z students revealed some eye-opening insights. One student raised concerns about videos that label certain types of people, such as "which student to avoid" or "what flatmate not to end up with." While these might seem inoffensive, or even funny, they cast a shadow of doubt and apprehension. Suddenly, students become wary of a diverse range of peers they haven't even met.

Beyond Universities: A Widespread Issue

This isn't just a problem at universities. Similar sentiments are echoed in co-living spaces, Build-To-Rent (BTR) communities, and university accommodation. The thirst for humorous content that guarantees likes, shares, and clicks seems to be overriding the basic principle of being kind. Living in co-living environments can be intimidating therefore content that is published to generate likes and shares without a consideration for the wider impact can be detrimental to the community you are trying to nurture.

The Dangers of Stereotypes in Digital Content

These videos and memes perpetuate stereotypes. Labels such as "the geek," "the control freak," or "the sporty one" are not just tags; they're limiting boxes that we force individuals into. It's an environment where judging books by their covers becomes the norm. This could lead individuals to question their identities, doubting whether they are likable or if they belong to the dreaded "ones to avoid" category.

The Shift Away from Acceptance

We've moved away from promoting individuality and acceptance, with the digital space now swarming with judgment, predispositions, and negativity. The prevailing narrative pushes for conformity to popular labels, often at the risk of ostracisation. However, it's crucial that we remember and rejuvenate the "Be Kind" movement. Recognising individuals for their true selves, rather than digital caricatures and stereotypes, is vital. Residents should have the liberty to be genuine without the anxiety of aligning with or deviating from popular labels.
